Mumbai, Sept. 14: Narayan Rane’s 30-minute meeting with Sonia Gandhi this morning has fuelled speculation that the Congress is keen on recalling Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan to the Centre.
Rane described the meeting at 10 Janpath as a “courtesy call” but the general belief was that he had gone to lobby for the chief minister’s post.
The buzz was that Manmohan Singh wants Chavan, who was his aide in the PMO before moving to the state in 2010, back and that he could get petroleum or an infrastructure-related portfolio. Chavan, seen as clean and progressive, was associated with the nuclear deal.
“I haven’t received any summons to Delhi yet,” Chavan told reporters today.
Rane has been a contender for the chief minister’s post since crossing over from the Shiv Sena in 2006 but does not enjoy Sonia’s trust.
