Rs 97000 snatched at bank door

Ranchi witnessed yet another snatching on Friday with an unidentified man targeting an employee of a construction company and fleeing with Rs 97,000 that the latter had withdrawn from a bank.

The incident took place in front of Vijaya Bank at Baralal Street of Upper Bazar, hardly half a kilometre from Kotwali police station.

Kalep Ekka (40), who has been working for Pragati Construction for 10 years, had just stepped out from Vijya Bank after collecting the cash and was on his way to his office on BD Adukia Road, about half a kilometre away, when he was targeted around 11.30am.

“Ekka was opening the dickey of his scooter parked outside the bank to stash the cash when a man, wearing a yellow shirt, came from behind, snatched the polythene containing the cash and ran away. Ekka, accompanied by two locals, chased the thief, but he outran them,” said Vineet Jalan, owner of the construction company.

A police officer added that primary investigations suggested that the snatcher spoke to one of the bank employees before committing the crime. “But we have not been able to identify the employee yet as there was no CCTV or a guard at the bank,” he added.

SSP Saket Kumar Singh said it appeared that some locals were involved. He also expressed concern over absence of CCTVs or security guards at the bank.
