Five burglars land in cop net

Police on Friday busted a gang of burglars by arresting five persons from different localities of Bagbera and Adityapur in East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts, respectively.

The five are Shyam Urma, Lalbabu Bhagat, Suraj Kotwal, Munna Sharma and Sonu Bachcha. Ornaments worth over Rs 2 lakh and Rs 9,000 in cash were recovered from the five — aged between 20 and 32. Screwdrivers and other tools with which they used to break open the locks of houses and almirahs were also seized.

Officer in charge of Parsudih police station sub-inspector Dayanand Kumar said initially, they had picked up seven suspects.

“First, we held Shyam Urma on the basis of whose statements we picked up six others from slum areas of suburban Bagbera and Adityapur. After interrogation and verification of the criminals’ activities, we found that two of them were innocent. We released them and arrested the five,” Kumar said.

Explaining their modus operandi, the officer in charge said the burglars used to target locked houses.

“The criminals would conduct recce in residential areas during the day and mark out the houses under lock and key. At night, they again visited the areas to check whether the houses were still locked, which implied that the occupants were away. Once they were sure, they would break into the empty houses post midnight,” Kumar said.

The police officer further said the gang had burgled two houses at Pramothnagar under the Parsudih police station in the past week. They decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh from the houses.

“We have been able to recover gold ornaments worth Rs 2 lakh and Rs 9,000 in cash that the men had burgled from the two houses on the nights of September 3 and September 7,” Kumar said.

The officer in charge said that the five would be sent to judicial custody on Saturday afternoon. “We will try to find out whether the accused had committed burglaries in any other place,” he said.
