Guwahati, Sept. 13: Sunrise Athletic Club jumped up a slot in the tally to seal the third place in Abhishek Motors R.G. Baruah Trophy Guwahati Sports Association Super League football tournament. They defeated Navajyoti Club by a solitary goal in their last match of the championship leg at Nehru Stadium here today. After a barren first session, African recruit striker Joseph Camara found the net for the all-important goal in the 60th minute of the truncated 80-minute match.
Camara took advantage of the opponents’ defence lapse to place a well-anticipated pass by Shaolin Singh from the left flank, beating Navajyoti stopper Vanlal Zuidika and custodian Subhajit Barman.
The first session was an evenly-poised affair. Camara got the first opportunity in the 14th minute, but was saved brilliantly by the agile Barman, guarding the Navajyoti woodwork. Shaolin Singh also got an opportunity in the first half but missed the woodwork by a whisker.
Ishak Sangma and Rocky Philem made inroads into the Sunrise castle but could not find the net.
With today’s win, Sunrise tallied 16 points and Navajyoti are placed fourth with 14.
Tomorrow, Dynamo Club will meet NF Railway SC in a must-win tie for the former to be the champions.
For the railmen, who have 18 points under their belt, a draw will be enough for their maiden title while Dynamo, placed second with 16 points, will have to win the match for the crown.
