Boy held for child marriage

Chinsurah, Sept. 13: A 19-year-old youth was arrested from Hooghly’s Khanakul last night for marrying a 15-year-old girl.

Six others were also picked up in this connection.

The block development officer of Khanakul II, Gautam Sanyal, and a police team raided a house at Natippur in Khanakul after they received information that a child was getting married there.

But by the time they reached, the marriage was over.

“We found a youth seated with a topor on his head and a girl with vermilion on her forehead,” the BDO said.

The officer-in-charge of Khanakul police station, Suman Roy Chowdhury, said the youth, Prasanta Maity, has been arrested under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, and house owner Ranjit Dhara, his wife Suniti and four others have also been held.

They were produced in the subdivisional judicial magistrate’s court at Arambag this morning and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

The girl has been handed over to her family.

The police said Prasanta and the girl were from Nabagram in Ghatal subdivision in West Midnapore.

The youth is a day labourer, the girl studies in Class IX.

“I am in love with Prasanta and my parents knew about it. But they were arranging my marriage with someone else. So I decided to elope and get married with him (Prasanta) at his friend’s house,” the girl told the BDO.
