Guwahati, Sept. 12: FCI Sports Club and Gauhati Town Club played to a 1-1 draw in a crucial relegation round match of the Abhishek Motors R.G. Baruah Trophy GSA Super Division football league at Nehru Stadium here today.
Lack of finishing and missed opportunities characterised the barren first half.
The second half, too, began on a lacklustre note, with both teams failing to display error-free football.
Both the teams made the occasional raid only to falter when it mattered.
FCI reserve goalkeeper Bitul Khanikar had to replace Gobinda Boro in the second half, after the latter had to sit out following an injury.
In the 69th minute, FCI striker Edenthara used his skills to net the ball after dodging past a defender inside the box. The FCI lead lasted for three minutes only, as Enondji drew parity following a goalmouth melee after Samarendra Singh’s corner kick struck FCI defender Birdwm Basumatary and the African was in the right position to net the ball.
The remaining 20 odd minutes of play saw both teams desperate for the winning goal, but to no avail.
GTC had more to gain, as they had just eight points in the tally before today’s game while FCI were sitting pretty on 11.
With today’s draw, Assam Police Blues, who have just seven points, must win against ASEB SC (10 points) in the match on Saturday to avoid relegation from the Super League.
