Silchar, Sept. 12: Three persons, suspected to be involved in the murder of a 70-year-old businesswoman in a highrise here on Sunday, were arrested last night.
Police said among the arrested are two milkmen, who used to supply milk to Kanchan Chacher’s sweet shop on Ranghirkhari Road in the southern part of the town.
Ramanath Yadav, 59, the owner of the building from where Kanchan ran her business on the ground floor, is the third person picked up by the police last night. Yadav allegedly masterminded the murder, the police said.
A senior police official today said the arrest of the two milkmen was possible from the footage from the four closed-circuit cameras installed in the posh flat of Kanchan at Sundarimohan lane on the same road, a prime commercial hub of the town.
Yadav, who had a running dispute with the Chacher family in his attempt to get them evicted from his building, hired the two men for Rs 2 lakh to kill Kanchan.
The police officer said the two men Bishnu Goala, 42, and his nephew, Sanju Goala, 14, strangulated Kanchan at her home.
Silchar police sources, based on the footage recovered from the two CCTV cameras, said both milkmen, who were known to Kanchan, arrived at her flat around 7.30 in the evening. They were let in and even served tea and snacks. Preliminary investigation put Kanchan’s time of death between 8pm and 9pm.
The killers at first damaged two CCTV cameras, but they did not know that two more cameras were keeping watch inside the house, including one in the drawing room.
Bishnu Goala was produced in a Silchar district court this afternoon and remanded in seven days’ police custody.
The superintendent of police, Diganta Bora, today said the other killer, Sanju, is just a 14-year-old juvenile and Radhanath Yadav is 60-years old. They would be both lodged in Silchar jail under judicial custody.
