Sainik school ready for 50yr bash
Munda chief guest on Day 2 of jubilee fest

Hazaribagh, Sept. 12: On September 16, Sainik School-Tilaiya will step into its golden jubilee year, and celebrating 50 years of its glorious tradition will be as many as 1,500 formers students who have promised to be there for the two-day affair.

Other than well-known defence personnel, Chief Justice of Patna High Court Shiva Kirti Singh and film-maker Prakash Jha are expected to attend the celebrations, for which preparations are on in full swing.

Chief minister Arjun Munda will attend the second day of the function on September 16. The school authorities have chalked out plans to make the event a grand success, and among plans are laying the foundation of a war memorial and inauguration of a golden jubilee park on the school campus.

The festivities will start with a cultural evening where famous Bhojpuri singer Sharda Sinha will be present. The next day, Munda will join the function as chief guest and inspect a parade by cadets. Three former students will address the function, which will be followed by unveiling of the school magazine.

Also on the cards is a football match on the second day. A group photograph session and honouring former students who have made the school proud form part of the celebrations.

According to principal Col V.K. Bhat, Sainik School-Tilaiya is one of the best residential schools in the country which aims to prepare its students academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA). He said out of 24 Sainik Schools all over India, the one in Tilaiya, 8km from the district headquarters in Koderma, had proved its mettle with its long tradition of glorious achievements.

He said the school came into existence on September 16, 1963 near Tilaiya Dam, thanks to the efforts of then chief minister K.B. Sahay and founding principal Lt Col. L.E.G Smith. He said since the day of its inception, Sainik School-Tilaiya has remained true to its ethos and has sent 800 cadets to NDA.

Among those who have given their consent to be present on the occasion are Lieutenant General Gyan Bhushan, Lieutenant General A.K. Choudhary, Air Marshal P.R. Sharma, Lieutenant General R.N. Singh, Lieutenant General (Retd) S.P. Choudhary, Major General (Retd) Brajesh Sharma, Chief Justice of Patna High Court Shiva Kirti Singh and film director Prakash Jha.

Bhat said being adjudged the best educational institution of Jharkhand in the year 2007, and the winner of the defence minister’s trophy twice for sending the maximum number of cadets to NDA are some of the honours that occupy a place of pride in the school’s history.
