A 17-year-old girl hanged herself to death at her Jhopri Colony home in Bokaro steel city on Wednesday.
Rekha Sharma’s body was found in the morning.
Rekha, whose father and brother are in jail on charges of abetting her sister-in-law’s suicide over dowry, left a suicide note for her mother in which she stated that she was ending her life as she could not be a “good daughter”.
The deceased, who earned a living by stitching clothes for her neighbours after she was forced to discontinue her studies when her family members were jailed, delivered all the clothes she had taken for stitching to her clients on Tuesday evening.
According to her mother, Rekha chatted with her till late Tuesday evening and the two even ate dinner together before retiring for the night. She woke up early morning to find her daughter hanging from a beam. She pulled the body down before alerting neighbours.
It was the neighbours who informed the Maraphari police, who rushed to the spot and questioned the victim’s mother who was being taken care of by neighbours.
Rekha’s father Nirmal Kumar Sharma and his son Vijay were sent to jail five years ago when Vijay’s wife committed suicide. Rekha’s mother had been jailed as well, and was only released from prison 15 days ago.
Maraphari police station officer-in-charge B.K Sinha said the body had been sent for post-mortem and investigations were on.
