Jammu: After winning their first exhibition match, Mohun Bagan lost 1-3 to Jammu and Kashmir XI via penalties in the final tie at the GGM Science College ground here on Tuesday after the regulation time ended 1-1.
The match was organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and J&K Football Association. “Today is the red letter day for the football team of Jammu and Kashmir as we defeated Mohun Bagan,” said R S Chib, minister for youth services and sports.
The minister congratulated the wining team for their outstanding performance and said that the motive of organising the match was to promote sports culture in the state. He said such events are being organised in the state with the efforts of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Sports Ministry.
J&K players urged chief minister to look into the problems of footballers in the state.
“We have improved and today we defeated Mohun Bagan, one of the best teams in the country,” a member of the J&K team told reporters.
Chib presented the trophy to the winning team besides distributing medals to the players of both the sides. J&K Bank announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh for the winning team and Rs 20,000 for captain Vikram Jeet Singh.
