Passenger dies after stone hit

A passenger of a private bus was fatally injured after a stone thrown from the road hit him on the head in Dum Dum on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver took the route 202 bus (travelling from Topsia to Nagerbazar) to South Dum Dum Municipal Hospital in Nagerbazar, where 45-year-old Pulak Banerjee was declared dead. Banerjee’s family members quoted some passengers as saying that the stone had been thrown by one of the youths with whom the conductor had an altercation moments before.

The driver in his complaint, however, said a “vagabond” had thrown the stone. “We are looking at all possibilities,” said Kalyan Mukherjee, deputy commissioner, detective department, Barrackpore City Police.

“Some passengers told us the conductor had an altercation with some youths who had not bought tickets,” said Pulak’s elder brother Aloke. “The youths got off the bus between Kamardanga and Hanuman Mandir and one of them hurled a stone at the conductor. Pulak was standing near the rear gate as he was to get off at Hanuman Mandir. The conductor ducked and the stone hit Pulak on his head.”

The resident of Jawpur in Dum Dum is survived by wife Malati and a 13-year-old daughter.

Death: The body of an unemployed engineer was found in his house in Jadavpur, where he lived alone, on Tuesday morning. Amitava Pal, 41, was spotted lying on his bed by his help. She alerted neighbours, who called police. There were no external injury marks on the body, said the cops.

Suicide: The body of a 41-year-old state government employee, who had been missing since Monday afternoon, was found floating in a lake in Patuli on Tuesday morning. Police said Joydeep Basu Mallick had called up one of his colleagues on Monday night and asked him to look after his family, suggesting suicide.

Baby killed: The body of a one-month-old girl was found from a well in her house in Khardah on Tuesday with her mouth taped shut while her twin sister, with whom she was sharing a bed, is missing. The girls’ mother had left them unattended for 30 minutes to go to an adjacent room. Police have started a murder case.
