Behrampore, Sept. 11: Police have arrested a couple in Behrampore on charges of murdering their baby boy a day after its birth and burying it behind their hut.
During interrogation, the baby’s 30-year-old mother Bani Karmakar is reported to have confessed that she had throttled her infant soon after birth on September 3 “because abject poverty” would have made it difficult for the couple to bring up the child.
After her husband Biswanath, 44, a night guard at a market in Berhampore town, returned home at Sardarpara, 8km from Berhampore, they dug a pit behind their hut and buried the baby on September 4.
The body was exhumed in presence of deputy magistrate Kshudiram Sardar this morning and sent to the Murshidabad district hospital at Berhampore for post-mortem.
“How can we afford to bring up another child? My husband earns Rs 1,500 a month and he has already five mouths to feed. I have two daughters, 12-year-old and 3-year-old and another son from my husband’s former wife. We decided to kill the baby as soon as it was born,” Bina told the police.
Bina, who allegedly had no compunction for having committed the murder, told the police that the couple had thought they would keep the matter a secret and live their life as usual.
“It was poverty which had prompted us to take such a cruel decision,” she has purportedly told the police.
“It would have remained unknown to all had Bani’s 12-year-old daughter not narrated the incident to their neighbours,” the inspector in charge of Behrampore police station Mohai Menul Haque said.
Haque said they came to know about the incident after someone in the village called up the police and informed them about the murder this morning.
It is learnt that the couple’s daughter Bina, who studies in Class VII, told neighbours yesterday afternoon that her mother had given birth to a bhai (brother).
She reportedly told the neighbours that her mother throttled him to death a little later and the baby had been buried behind their hut after her father returned home.
One of the neighbours then went to the police to narrate the incident this morning.
According to the inspector-in charge, the couple would be produced in the court tomorrow and they had been charged under section 302 of the IPC for having committed the murder.
