Balurghat, Sept. 10: Eight persons were injured in a clash between the supporters of the SFI and the Trinamul Chhatra Parishad and in a police lathicharge to disperse the warring groups at Harirampur College today, forcing the principal to close the institution till Friday.
Principal Kshetramahan Sarkar said a decision on reopening the college would be taken after an all-party meeting he would hold on Thursday.
The SFI alleged that TMCP supporters had barged into the union office and ordered its members to leave. “They were armed with iron rods and bamboo poles. When an SFI member raised protest, he was beaten up by the TMCP activists,” said Khadimul Islam, the local secretary of the SFI in Harirampur.
Soon, other SFI supporters rushed to rescue him, but they were outnumbered by the TMCP workers. “A full-fledged clash ensued and police reached the campus and resorted to a baton charge,” said a source.
