Damper on ‘PM’ Sushma

Sushma Swaraj

New Delhi, Sept. 10: Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav today sought to dismiss suggestions that Sushma Swaraj was the NDA’s “ideal” candidate for Prime Minister, saying such comments devalued the post that was “not some fried item”.

Pradhan Mantri ka pad koi pakaudi nahi hai. Pradhan Mantri banna aashan nahi hai (the Prime Minister’s post is not some fried item. It is not easy to become a Prime Minister),” Sharad said, asked about Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray’s comments published yesterday.

Asked who would be the right person for the job, Thackeray had told Sena mouthpiece Saamna that the “intelligent, brilliant” Sushma would be a “great choice”.

Sharad also said 2014, when the Lok Sabha elections are due, was still “far away” and there was no question of early polls but acknowledged that the BJP, being the senior partner, would have a big say in finalising the coalition’s prime ministerial candidate. “The BJP will take a call … when the time comes in consultation with the NDA partners,” he said.

In Patna, Nitish Kumar too said as much, asserting that NDA partners would take a collective decision. “First the BJP will decide on its prime ministerial candidate. Then all the NDA partners will sit together to discuss the prime ministerial candidate proposed by the BJP,” he said, without naming Sushma.
