The city gets rugbyd!

A heavy downpour and a chance to splash about in the mud is not just a football lover’s prerogative. Rugby rocks too! t2 witnessed it first-hand at the Royal Challenge presents All India & South Asia Rugby Tournament in association with The Telegraph, at CC&FC on Sunday. Here’s a tourney ready-reckoner:

When: September 8 to 15.

Where: CC&FC

Team up: Twelve teams from all over India will wrestle to claim the replica of the Calcutta Cup that was gifted by the Rugby Football Union to CC&FC in 1924 in recognition of the rising enthusiasm for the sport in the country. The original is now housed in England, the winner of this year’s Six Nations Championship. Currently in its 79th edition, the tournament has eight outstation teams including five-time winners Army Red. CC&FC, Calcutta Police Sergeants Institute, Maidan Hazards and Jungle Crows shine on the made-in-Calcutta list.

Team speak: The rain made 21-year-old Sourojit Ghosh envious of the players on the ground. “If it’s rugby then it must rain!” sighed the St. Xavier’s College student representing Team CC&FC.

Club Speak: “This tournament, held every alternate year at CC&FC and Bombay Gymkhana, is one of the most looked-forward-to all over India. 2010 saw a gripping finale between the Army Reds and the Chennai Cheetahs. That was the only match which had come close to slamming the brakes on the Army’s winning streak,” said CC&FC CEO, Deepankar Nandi.
