Calcutta: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s elder brother, Ajit, who has been elected president unopposed, and one of the younger brothers Swapan, will call the shots in the Bengal Olympic Association (BOA). Swapan is one of the four joint secretaries.
As expected, the Banerjees and their men were elected unopposed as Kamalesh Chatterjee’s panel withdrew on the floor during the 40-minute annual general meeting at the Salt Lake Stadium, on Sunday.
Ajit Banerjee said the focus would be on having better infrastructure so that athletes do not leave the state. “Athletes are leaving Bengal as other states have better training facilities. The best way to improve infrastructure is to have the National Games. I’m not saying we will bid for National Games. These are early days… We have our task cut out.”
