The violence was triggered when a gunman from one community suddenly opened fire from his single-barrelled gun during a heated argument between members of the two communities. The officer-in-charge of Badarpur police station, Abul Hasan, said the situation was brought under control after the Assam armed police and the CRPF were rushed to the village from Badarpur railway town.

The injured had been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital at Ghoonger, he added.

The person who died has been identified as Hossain Ahmed, 22.

Hasan said the situation was now returning to normal and all police stations in Karimganj district had been placed on alert.
