11-hour curfew in Dhubri

Dhubri, Sept. 8: The district administration has clamped curfew here from 7pm today till 6am tomorrow in view of the deteriorating law and order situation following a burglary in a temple on Mission Road last night.

The thieves also damaged an idol of Goddess Kali.

A spontaneous strike was observed here in protest against the incident, affecting traffic and leading to closure of shops, educational and financial institutions and government offices.

Rakesh Ghose, 17, sustained serious head injuries after being attacked by a group opposing the strike and was shifted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

A peace meet convened by the district administration turned stormy, with representatives of different organisations and parties condemning the burglary and demanding arrest of the culprits within 24 hours. CRPF and RAF personnel have been deployed in all vulnerable areas here.
