Bhowanipore stun Md. Sp.

Calcutta: Jose Ramirez Barreto and Jagannath Sana were on target as a 10-man Bhowanipore Club stunned Emta Mohammedan Sporting 2-0 in a Calcutta Football League Premier Division match at the Salt Lake Stadium, here, on Friday.

This was Bhowanipore’s first victory in the CFL. Mohammedan Sporting, on the other hand, paid the price of muffing numerous chances, including a penalty, as they slumped to their first defeat in the league.

Speaking after the match, Barreto said: “I’m getting better with every match. This is a very young side and the boys are learning fast. I’m glad that I could score a goal to inspire them.”

Mohammedan Sporting players failed to show intent and were playing without a purpose in a match that was marred by refereeing errors.

Bhowanipore took the lead as early as in the eighth minute. Barreto seemed to be in an offside position when he was released by Sanju Kumar. With the flag staying down, he made a rippling run before shooting a right-footer.

Mohammedan Sporting goalkeeper Somnath Khara came off his line to punch away Barreto’s shot. However, the Brazilian followed the ball to push it home.

Mohammedan Sporting got a chance to equalise in the 26th minute but Alfred Jaryan shot wide.

After the changeover, Bhowanipore were reduced to 10 men when referee Ranjit Bakshi brandished a red card to Nazimuddin Mullick for fouling Krishanu Banerjee.

A minute later, Jagannath Sana scored a magnificent goal to double the lead for Bhowanipore.

Making a run from the centre-line, he dribbled past three players to find the back of the net with a powerful left-footer.
