Siliguri, Sept. 7: Excessive rain and pest attacks have led to a loss of over 44 lakh kg of tea in Dooars till June this year, the Tea Board of India said.
Production has reduced by 3.37 lakh kg in Darjeeling in the same period, while in Terai, it has increased by 7.09 lakh kg.
The total production in Dooars for June was 1.49 crore kg, lower by 44.12 lakh kg compared to June last year. In Darjeeling it was 9.86 lakh kg, less by 3.37 lakh kg in June last year. “This decline has affected the total production in Bengal,” said a source.
Prabir Bhattacharjee, the secretary of the Dooars Branch of the Indian Tea Association, said: “Because of inclement weather and intense pest and mite attacks there has been a loss in production.”
