Villagers demand new bridge

Bolpur, Sept. 7: Villagers in Bolpur, led by Trinamul workers, today demonstrated outside the offices of the block development officer and the panchayat samity demanding reconstruction of a bridge that collapsed a month ago.

Around 200 villagers fromNoadangla arrived outside the building that houses the two offices and shouted slogans against the BDO.

Some of the villagers met the joint BDO, Jawahar Kumar Adhikary, in his chambers and demanded the reconstruction of the bridge as well as the development of the area.

“The villagers were clearly angry and demanded a bridge over the irrigation canal that had collapsed a month ago. They also had some demands relating to development of the area.” the joint BDO said.

The villagers said the lack of a bridge forced them to travel 14-15km more to reach Bolpur.

After assuring the villagers that the bridge would be constructed soon, Adhikaryasked them to visit the sabhapati of the CPM-run panchayat samity, Ananda Kora, to discuss the other issues on development.

But the agitators went on a rampage in Kora’s office, breaking furniture and other items. One of the villagers picked up a chair and hit Kora with it. Kora was injured on his right arm and forehead. He was given a stitch on his arm and released from Bolpur primary health centre.

“The attack was on me was unexpected. I don’t why the villagers attacked me. Trinamul leader Mahadeb Roy led the attack,” said Kora.

Trinamul denied the allegation.
