Calcutta: Tolgay Ozebe scored a brace on his debut for Mohun Bagan to help them thrash George Telegraph 3-0 in the Airlines Cup semi-final at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. Jewel Raja scored the other goal for the green and maroon brigade.
The Santosh Kashyap-coached side could have won by a bigger margin had luck been on their side. As many as three shots hit the bar and the cross-piece and Kashyap obviously rued his fate.
Bagan put up a listless performance in the first half where the only chance came when a Jewel free-kick hit the cross-piece. But they showed a drastic improvement in the second half as their players played with more intent. The introduction of Okolie Odafe after the break also seemed to lift their spirits, even as midfielders Raja and Manish Bhargav started to distribute the ball with precision.
It took 62 minutes to break the deadlock. Lalrozama Fanai’s cross, from a Odafe corner, got deflected and landed at Jewel’s feet. The midfielder’s left footer found the back of the net. Ten minutes later, Tolgay scored his first goal. After receiving a through, Tolgay fooled his marker with a good turn and made a rippling run through the middle to shoot the ball home.
Tolgay completed the rout in the 77th minute. Jewel made a brilliant run through the middle before passing it on to Tolgay. The Australian didn’t make any mistake in shooting the ball into the open net.
