PLA cadre arrested

Shillong, Sept. 5: The BSF last night apprehended a hardcore cadre of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) who is allegedly the “area secretary” of Imphal (West) division along the India-Bangladesh border in the Meghalaya sector.

Troops deployed at Dawki border outpost in East Khasi Hills arrested “lieutenant” Athokpam Surchandra Singh, 43, hailing from Imphal East while he was trying to enter India from Bangladesh.

During preliminary interrogation, a BSF official said Singh had confessed that he belonged to the ninth batch of the PLA and underwent training in 1993. He was also allegedly involved in organisational work of the PLA in Bangladesh by organising public meetings and motivating the youths to join the outfit. The BSF recovered Rs 8,735 and a mobile phone with two Indian SIM cards from him. Singh was later handed over to police for further interrogation.
