IISWBM mixes business with pleasure

Fiera Fiesta 2012, an industrial fest and seminar by the students of the public systems management department of the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management (IISWBM) on September 1 and 2, showcased the professional efficiency of the biz students.

“Fiera” means “fire” and “fiesta” means “carnival”. According to the organisers, the idea was “to ignite the fiery spirit and conduct a carnival providing a platform for interaction between the industry and the present and prospective students.”

The seminar was inaugurated by Samar Jha, a member of the planning board of West Bengal, along with institute director D.K. Sanyal. In his speech, Jha focused on public services and the spirit in which it needs to be provided, also touching upon the availability, accessibility and affordability of public sector services.

Later in the day, a panel discussed the “role of public systems management in industry and society”, where the speakers included Krishnendu Datta, DGM (operations), SembRamky Environmental Management, Debasish Sharma, head of medical services, Fortis Hospital, and Gautam Ray, executive director (HR and administration), CESC.

Doing justice to the word “public”, the students of the public systems management course organised a social programme, the proceeds of which will be donated to Pranab Kanya Sangha, the women and children branch of Bharat Sevashram Sangha.

The two-day event also packed in interactive programmes like debates and quiz, where students of other city colleges also participated.

On Day 2, former students of the institute met the present lot, exchanging tips and stories and boosting the morale of the youngsters for exams and placements.

Students of IISWBM’s MPSM department took home the quiz trophy while those of the MHRM department bagged the debate crown. The final evening was reserved for music and dance.

Institute director Sanyal wrapped up the event with: “Our courses are tailor-made for the changing business environment and our students are better equipped for future challenges.”
