Probe into ‘kidnap’ arrest

The Bidhannagar commissionerate has initiated a departmental probe into the role of the officer-in-charge and a sub-inspector of Lake Town police station in the arrest of 27-year-old Sagar Sriwas. Sagar was arrested on Tuesday on the charge of kidnapping Bangur resident Komal, 22, who turned out to be his wife.

Burglaries: Gold ornaments and cash worth Rs 4 lakh were stolen from a flat in Entally while its occupants were away on Tuesday. Police said there was no sign of a break-in.

In Sonarpur, six burglars broke into a trader’s house, held the residents at gunpoint and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 1.5 lakh on Tuesday night. The trader, Naba Kumar Bhandari, said the burglars had their faces covered and two of them were speaking in Hindi.

Tebhaga Express: The Calcutta-Balurghat Tebhaga Express will run six days a week from September 5. The 13161 Up Tebhaga Express will leave Calcutta station on all days except Saturdays. The down train will leave Balurghat on all days except Sundays.

Paint for Durga idol: The state pollution control board on Wednesday handed over non-toxic paints to some idol-makers in Kumartuli and other parts of the city. The paints were provided free by paint-manufacturing companies.

Taxi driver dead: A taxi driver was found dead at the steering wheel in Ballygunge on Wednesday. Police said Shankar Yadav, 40, a resident of Bhowanipore, apparently died after suffering a heart attack. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

Accident: A man died and another was seriously injured after a vehicle hit them near the Hastings crossing early on Wednesday.
