Return of the fashion week

It’s back! After three years, Calcutta is set to host its third edition of a fashion week. Titled Fashion Week Kolkata, this fashion fest in association with t2, will be held at The Park from September 14 to 17.

Organised by newly formed fashion event house Genesis Square, the event promises to bring fashion back to the forefront in the city — at least for these four days.

FWK will kick off with a clutch of Bengal weavers on September 14 — the theme for the week is ‘Weavers from Bengal’ — and Bollywood style badshah Manish Malhotra will bring down the curtains at an off-site show on September 17.

“I share a special relationship with Calcutta and I am participating at FWK purely for the love of the city,” Manish told Metro.

Around 30 designers, a mix of big-league names like Narendra Kumar, Bibi Russell and Manoviraj Khosla, and upcoming talent from Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta feature on the to-show list. The city contingent will be represented by the likes of Abhishek Dutta, Agnimitra Paul and Soumitra Mondal.

To jog you down memory ramp, Calcutta saw its first fashion week in April 2009. Held at the PC Chandra Gardens, memorable moments included a jig by Rohit Bal during the finale as a dishy John Abraham looked on. The second season was held at ITC The Sonar in September 2009.

Yudhajit Dutta, who was at the helm of affairs for these events, puts down “sponsorship issues” as the cause for the fashion week going MIA (missing in action). “I am very excited about reviving the fashion week in Calcutta. The city deserves its own fashion extravaganza,” said event director Yudhajit.

Galaxy, The Park’s premium banquet, will be all ramped up to host the designer’s collections. There will also be a four-day exhibition featuring 40 designers (including some that will showcase on the ramp) at The Park banquets.

While the previous two editions had a strong celebrity showstopper thrust — from Bong beauty Bipasha Basu to Brazilian babe Giselle Monteiro — this time the focus will be on “designers and the designs”. Models from across the country will walk for FWK. There will be a model audition to finalise the Calcutta list.

So, here’s to some designer magic in the monsoon!
