Civic workers to be paid

Kharagpur, Sept. 5: Over 550 serving and retired employees of the Kharagpur municipality will get their pay for August tomorrow after a five-day delay that had been caused by a confusion over who should sign the cheques with outgoing chairman Jawarlal Pal refusing to step down.

The joint secretary of the municipal affairs department today issued a directive to the additional district magistrate of West Midnapore to allow Pal to sign the cheques.

The letter added that a “legal opinion” had been sought after Pal refused to resign despite losing a no-trust vote moved by the Congress on August 27. The joint secretary said Pal could continue as the chairman till the department arrived at a decision on him.

“All employees would get their salaries tomorrow,” Pal announced.

Opposition leader in the municipality Ravi Shankar Pande said the directive was “illegal.” “We will move high court against it.”
