Fraud cuffs on trader

Durgapur, Sept. 5: Police have arrested the owner of two sponge iron factories and several hotels and refuelling stations in Bhubaneswar for allegedly taking Rs 43 lakh from a Bankura-based ferro alloys plant owner in 2009 but not delivering the consignment of iron ore.

The owner of the ferro alloys factory in Borjora, Nirmal De, had lodged a police complaint against Niranjan Mullick last month.

A police team was sent to Bhubaneswar last week. The team arrested Mullick two days ago. He was brought to Borjora police station last night on transit remand.

De said he had given Mullick Rs 43 lakh as advance for supplying 1,000 tones of iron ore. “I contacted him through a local broker and gave him the money in 2009 after visiting his factories near Puri. But he never supplied me the iron ore. Whenever I asked him to either supply the material or return the money, he kept giving excuses,” De said.

The police said investigations had revealed that Mullick, a resident of Odisha, had cheated many factory owners in Bengal and Odhisa in similar fashion.
