Calcutta: Former India captain and coach Syed Nayeemuddin feels Wim Koevermans will do Indian football a world of good if he is given a free hand in the running of the national team. The Indian side, led by Sunil Chetri, won the Nehru Cup under Koevermans coaching.
“These are early days but Koevermans has already shown that he’s up for it… He’s certainly better than Bob Houghton. He’s brought in fresh ideas and it’s showing in the team’s performance,” the Arjuna and Dronacharya award winner said. “The road ahead will be crucial. Let’s see how he adjusts.”
Nayeem, however, doesn’t wish to rate him as the best foreign coach in India. “Ciric Milovan remains the most impressive… No one can beat him…”
He was all praise for the players. “It was a great victory. Beating Cameroon in the final was no easy task. All credit to the players. They showed great teamwork and the way they fought back in the final was exemplary.”
