Calcutta: Talented Indian youngster Sumit Nagal bowed out from the first round of the US Open boys’ singles, on Monday.
Sumit, who had played exceedingly well in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw, fought very hard against eighth-seeded Japanese Kaichi Uchida but eventually lost 6-4, 1-6, 1-6.
The fifteen-year-old, who has Mahesh Bhupathi as his mentor, outclassed Uchida in the first set. But unfortunately, he couldn’t keep up the momentum against the Japanese, who was older and stronger.
His challenge faded away as Uchida pocketed the next two sets easily to advance to the next round.
Nagal, who receives a 100 per cent scholarship from Bhupathi, had shifted his base to Toronto after the Apollo Tyres Mission camp in Bangalore shut down.
