Cops on the hunt for interstate gang

Dumka, Sept. 4: A gang of robbers from Banka in neighbouring Bihar and their associates in Dumka were involved in the murder of trader Vikash Bhalotia on August 26, local police have said while stepping up raids in the districts to nab the culprits.

Dumka police are yet to make a breakthrough in the robbery and murder of Bhalotia at his residence in Dharampur-Purnea village under Jama police station, following which traders protested the failure of the administration to rein in anti-social elements.

However, Dumka SP Hemant Toppo, who is monitoring investigations into the trader’s murder and other incidents of theft in shops, said, “We have managed to identify the gang involved in the robbery and murder of the trader. It has interstate links.” He added the police were raiding places in Banka and Dumka.

According to Toppo, the gang is dominated by members of a particular caste and is active in Banka and neighbouring districts of Santhal Pargana. He said it was infamous for targeting businessmen.

Senior police officers, including the SP and DIG Dadan Jee Sharma, have asked their sub-ordinates to keep vigil and crack down on criminal gangs.

Local police came under more criticism following the theft of 21 laptops from a computer store close to Town Police station on Saturday night.
