Woman’s arm slashed

A woman’s arm was slashed several times by her neighbours on Tuesday evening after she objected to their drinking and creating a ruckus in the locality every evening.

Manila Bibi, 32, who lives in a shanty at Bijpur in North 24-Parganas, was attacked by neighbours Bhakti Debnath and Raju Chanda around 6.30pm. “We have arrested Bhakti Debnath and Raju Chanda. There are molestation and attempt to murder charges against them,” said Kalyan Mukherjee, deputy commissioner, detective department, Barrackpore.

The duo allegedly stormed into the woman’s house, dragged her out and slashed her hand several times.

Suicide: A middle-aged stock trader apparently struggling to repay a personal loan of Rs 1.25 lakh committed suicide by drinking phenol at his Ekdalia Road house early on Tuesday.

Ravi Goenka, 48, was spotted gasping for breath on the balcony of his rented house by the eldest of his three children, who is studying to become a chartered accountant.

“The youth found an empty bottle of phenol on the balcony. Ravi Goenka was taken to a nursing home and then shifted to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared dead,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner, crime.

A preliminary post-mortem report revealed the presence of 200ml of phenol in Goenka’s stomach, the police said. No suicide note was found. “A probe suggests that Goenka had defaulted a number of times on a personal loan of Rs 1.25lakh he had taken from a bank,” said Ghosh.

Metro: Metro service was stalled for nearly 30 minutes on Tuesday afternoon when a New Garia-bound air-conditioned train got stuck at Sovabazar because of a snag. Officials said the snag occurred at 4.18pm. The service resumed at 4.44p.m. No one was injured.
