A gang of robbers assaulted a homemaker for delaying to hand over the keys to a safe in her home at Birati on Monday.
Rita Roy in her 30s, was left bleeding from the head and had to have her wound stitched up, said police.
Rita and her son Rohit, a Class X student, were sleeping in a room on the first floor of their two-storey house in Dakshin Nilachal and her husband, Rabi, in another room when the robbers broke open the door to the roof around 1.40am and entered the house.
“Four men came inside while two were waiting outside. They first woke up my wife and son,” said Rabi. The robbers demanded the keys to the safe but Rita hesitated, he added. The robbers hit Rohit. Seeing that, Rita handed over the keys. “They snatched the keys and one of them hit her hard with the butt of a gun,” said Rabi.
Two robbers entered Rabi’s room. They held a gun to his head and opened the safe. “They took away jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh and Rs 30,000,” said Rabi, who has a catering business. The gang also took away four cellphones and two DVD players.
The gang left at 2.15am after rounding up the Roys in a room and bolting the door. They stayed quiet for 30 minutes before shouting for help. Neighbours broke open the door and rushed Rita to hospital.
“We are trying to nab the culprits,” said Santosh Nimbalkar, additional deputy commissioner (airport division), Bidhannagar commissionerate.
