Teachers to protest on Sept. 5

Shillong, Sept. 2: Primary schoolteachers under the banner of the All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers’ Association and the Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers’ Association will stage a black-flag protest on Teachers’ Day as the state government is yet to fulfil their demands.

The black-flag protest will be staged at the State Central Library here from 10am to 3pm, a joint statement from the associations said.

Among others, the demands of the primary school teachers’ association include regular payment of their monthly salary, payment of head teacher’s allowance, inclusion of primary teachers appointed in the past as government teachers along with retirement benefits.

Enhancement of salaries of the primary schoolteachers, appointment of Hindi teachers and implementation of an education policy are some of the demands of the other association.

Primary schoolteachers from Garo hills have also decided to boycott Teachers’ Day celebrations on September 5. Instead, they would wear black badges and carry black flags that day.
