32 to be feted on sports day

Guwahati, Sept. 2: Altogether 32 sportspersons, including two Olympians, will be honoured for their achievements in the last year on the 29th Abhiruchi Sports Day, marking the birthday of Arjuna awardee Bhogeswar Barua, in the central function here tomorrow.

The traditional mass jogging from Chandmari Flyover to Nehru Stadium via GNB Road will be flagged off by Bhogeswar Barua himself in presence of Arjuna awardee archer Jayanta Talukdar at 6.15am.

Though Mumbai-based Arjuna awardee paddler Monalisha Baruah Mehta was also supposed to attend the day’s functions, she will not be able to make it because of health problems, said organising committee chairman Bolendra Mohan Chakraborty.

The run will be followed by a traditional dance and physical training competition between students of different schools and the felicitation ceremony at Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan indoor stadium here from 9am onwards.

The 32 sportspersons, to be honoured, include two Olympians in Talukdar and pugilist Shiva Thapa among the 29 internationals.

Paddler Kritika Upadhaya, shuttler Anjit Chaliha and cricketer Rajjakuddin Ahmed will be honoured as promising players. Apart from them, organiser Tridib Duvarah of Assam Table Tennis Association, karate coach Ram Bahadur Gurung, two former players Rafiq Choudhury and Rafiquddin Choudhury and two heads of educational institutions — Basanta Kumar Bhuyan (Gurukul Grammar Senior Secondary School) and Parikshit Medhi (Gopal Boro Higher Secondary School) — will be felicitated on the occasion. The internationals to be honoured are Jayanta Talukdar, Protiva Boro (both archery), Shiva Thapa, Bhagyabati Kachari (both boxing), Alen Dori, Halicharan Narzary, Nabin Rabha, Bauringdao Boro, Garemocha Basumatary, Fwidan Borgayari, Rajib Boro (all football), Saurabh Gogoi, Apurba Chetia, Papul Changmai, Zamir Hussain, Swapnapriya Baruah (all weightlifting), Tania Choudhury, Ruptu Gogoi, Manu Kumari Paul, Nayanmoni Saikia (all lawn bowls), Rekharani Gogoi, Ajoy Boro, Sangita Borgayari (all taekwondo), Sanjay Kumar Sao, Moon Kumar Deori, Jadab Jyoti Rajguru, Rithi Boro (all karate), Birdie Boro (table tennis) and Bhabajit Choudhury (wushu).
