Driver held for molestation

A pool car driver was arrested in Madhyamgram on Sunday for allegedly molesting a five-year-old girl he used to ferry from home to school and back.

Kumaresh Kar, 42, was picked up from his home after the girl’s mother lodged a complaint with Ghola police station, on the northern fringes of the city. He has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

The girl’s parents said they came to know about the molestation after she refused to go to school on Friday.

“She didn’t want to go to school on Friday and kept mum when I asked her the reason. It’s only when I tried to gently force her to get ready for school that she said the driver had misbehaved with her. I didn’t believe her and thought it was an excuse to stay away from school. I sent her to school in the same car,” recalled the mother.

When the girl returned home in the evening, the mother asked her in detail about what had happened.

“My daughter’s classes end at 2.10pm. She would wait in the car till the classes of the other students would be over at 2.50pm. The driver used to molest her during the period she was alone,” the mother said.

She called the owner of the pool car on Saturday morning and complained against the driver. The owner promised action and asked her to wait till Sunday morning.

“I waited in vain till the afternoon for the owner to call before going to the police station to lodge a complaint,” the mother said.
