NIA team in state to probe US rifle haul

Hazaribagh, Sept.1: A two member National Investigation Agency (NIA) team reached Hazaribagh this evening to question Anil Yadav, the CPI (Maoists) arms unit head in Bihar and Jharkhand, about the rebels’ international links following the recovery of an US-made rifle and a bullet-proof vest.

A police team recovered the M16 rifle and UK-made bullet proof vest from arms supplier Praful Malakar who was to hand them over to Yadav. Rs 9 lakh cash and an Italian-made pistol were found on Yadav.

Sources said the recoveries had made the security agencies worried. Though there had been reports earlier about international connections of Maoists, no foreign-made arms had been recovered.

The bullet-proof vest costs between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4 lakh and is not even available with Jharkhand police. The M16 rifle, which costs Rs 8 lakh, is similar to the Insaas rifles used by security forces.

The two-member NIA team comprises an officer from Lucknow and another from Delhi.
