Alipurduar, Aug. 31: Political parties in Alipurduar have unanimously decided that a solid waste management plant will be set up at Kalchini in the next one year and till then garbage in the town would be dumped on a vested plot in the civic area.
The decision was taken at an all-party meeting convened by the subdivisional officer at the Alipurduar circuit house yesterday.
The 49-year-old Alipurduar municipality that collects around four tonnes of garbage everyday does not have a dumping ground.
In the past couple of months, the civic body has tried dumping waste in several municipal areas but had to face resistance from the local people at least six times.
The civic body had even stopped collecting waste as it did not have a place to dispose it.
“We will be able to dispose garbage on a vested land in the municipal area in the next seven days. The solid waste management project will be set up at Majherdabri in Kalchini block. The project would cost Rs 3-4 crore and it would take at least one year to complete,” said Dipto Chatterjee, the Congress chairman of Alipurduar municipality.
Sources said the vested land is in ward IV of the municipality.
Representatives of the Congress, Trinamul Congress, RSP and CPM had attended the all-party meeting yesterday.
