Cash rewards for Shiva, Jayanta

Guwahati, Aug. 31: Byatikram Mass Awareness and Social Development Organisation (BMASDO), a Guwahati-based NGO, today announced cash rewards of Rs 1 lakh each to Olympians Jayanta Talukdar and Shiva Thapa. This announcement comes a few days after the organisation declared that they would felicitate Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom ceremonially in Calcutta on September 6.

When pointed out that holding a reward ceremony involving a Northeast sportsperson by a city-based organisation in Calcutta could send a wrong signal, the NGO’s president Saumen Bharatiya said the objective was to introduce Mary Kom to the rest of the country. He added it was also an initiative to draw the attention of the Bengal government towards sports in the Northeast. “We are going to organise a similar programme very soon involving six Olympians from the region in Guwahati where pugilist Thapa and archer Talukdar would be presented the cash rewards,” he said. The NGO will present Rs 2 lakh to Mary Kom in the Calcutta function where Indian Olympic Association vice-president Bhubaneswar Kalita, Bengal sports minister Madan Mitra, cricketer Jhulan Goswami, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ali Qamar will be present.
