New Delhi, Aug. 31: The terror suspects arrested in Karnataka had planned to target nuclear installations and naval bases in the state, government officials said today.
The suspects have revealed to sleuths and police that the navy’s INS Kadamba at Karwar was one of their targets. “They had carried out a survey of Karwar this year,” an official said.
The revelation has shaken up the security establishment and raised concerns about the safety of the Kaiga nuclear power station. But sources said the suspects had not surveyed Kaiga.
The Karwar naval base was set up in 2005 so ships can be berthed farther away from Karachi. A navy spokesperson said there were at least four layers of security at all important bases. “We are always in a certain state of alert at all our operational areas and have multiple layers of security.”
