Eight budding filmmakers have taken up the reel challenge of spreading awareness against human trafficking.
The eight — all final-year mass communication students of St Xavier’s College, Ranchi — have come forward to make a 25-minute documentary film on the issue.
Prior to embarking on the project, the students carried out a two-month survey (June and July) in pockets of Khunti and Simdega districts that are prone to human trafficking.
“It will take another six months to complete the film. We chose this issue as our state is fighting to control human trafficking with fresh cases making headlines now and then,” said one of the students, Atul Anand.
He added that their main idea was to highlight the reasons behind trafficking. “We were moved with the plight of the villagers, who are reeling under poverty. Their only source of sustenance is a small piece of agricultural land. As a result, they don’t have money to feed extra mouths and are forced to send their children to cities in the hope of getting some money,” he said.
He added that they also spoke to some of the victims who somehow managed to return to the villages or were rescued. “The main reasons behind the growing incidents of human trafficking are poverty, illiteracy and unemployment and our documentary film will highlight these issues,” Atul added.
It will be screened at the college’s film festival, Cynosure, in January.
