Teacher stabbed

Calcutta, Aug. 31: A youth stabbed a primary school teacher in South 24-Parganas today.

The youth attacked Arnab Banerjee, 35, the acting headmaster of Matherdighi Primary School, while he was walking to school.

Banerjee, who was stabbed in the abdomen, was first admitted to Canning block primary health centre but later transferred to Canning subdivisional hospital. Doctors there said the teacher was critical and had received 20 stitches.

Matherdighi residents said the youth kept stabbing him before they overpowered and handed him to Canning police.

The police, after interrogating the youth, said his answers were incoherent. “He has been admitted to Canning subdivisional hospital for medical tests and if necessary, he will be examined by a psychiatrist,” said Praveen Kumar Tripathi, the district superintendent of police.
