Calcutta calling Katrina for Bolly biggie

- Yash Raj sets Gunday, with Ranveer and Arjun, in town to capture turbulent ’70s

After Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif is set to make Calcutta her home — for a few weeks. “If things work out”, Bollywood’s heroine no. 1 will camp in the city in February 2013.

Joining her would be Band Baaja Baaraat boy Ranveer Singh and Ishaqzaade man Arjun Kapoor, as they play Gunday in Yash Raj Film’s next biggie, set entirely in Calcutta.

If two Bengali directors — Sujoy Ghosh and Anurag Basu — had brought Vidya and Priyanka to Calcutta for Kahaani and Barfi!, Ali Abbas Zafar, who directed Katrina in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, will helm Gunday. “When I was in college, I stayed in Calcutta for a month and a half. I found the architecture fascinating and felt the city had great character,” Ali, in town location-hunting (from Howrah bridge to Bhowanipore Cemetery), told Metro.

Gunday, to be shot in a 45-day schedule, is set “in the most turbulent time in the history of Calcutta, from 1971 to1988”. Ranveer and Arjun play Bikram and Bala, who “rose from being small-time wagon breakers and coal thieves to become the biggest and most powerful black-marketing mafia men”. Also expected to be in the cast in a crucial role is Irrfan Khan.

“I am very excited to be shooting again in Calcutta (after Lootera),” Ranveer told Metro. “I am very fond of seafood and I absolutely love the way Bengalis cook their fish! I am also looking forward to incognito night-time jogging on the streets with my headphones and hooded jacket.”

While the presence of Katrina in the cast is yet to be made official, Ali let the Kat out of the bag. Almost. “I would love to have her play the leading lady but she is a very big actress.... She is also a very good friend and I hope she does Gunday,” he said.

Actor Arindam Sil’s production house Nothing Beyond Cinema, which had line-produced Kahaani, would handle Gunday. Ali and his team plan to come down during Durga Puja to capture some stock shots.

Katrina fans in town are urged to appeal to Ma Durga for her shoot schedules with the Khans — Aamir (Dhoom:3) and Shah Rukh (Yash Chopra’s next) — to go according to plan, so that she is free to spend Valentine’s Day in Calcutta!
