Squatters meet MK

Calcutta, Aug. 30: Nonadanga encroachers facing eviction from Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority land today met governor M.K. Narayanan and requested him to ensure proper rehabilitation.

“The governor gave us a sympathetic and patient hearing. He enquired if any new encroachments had taken place,’’ said Amitabha Bhattacharya, the president of the Nonadanga Ucched Pratirodh Committee.

“We told the governor that the people living in shanties in Nonadanga included Aila victims from the Sunderbans and slum-dwellers from Calcutta who cannot afford the rising rent,” Bhattacharya said.

There was no independent confirmation from Raj Bhavan about the statements attributed to the governor .
