Quake hits region
Shillong, Aug.19: A moderate intensity earthquake, measuring 5 on the Richter scale, shook the Northeast at 2.55pm today. The epicentre of the tremor was near Tezpur in Assam, said an official with the Upper Shillong Seismological Observatory. Besides Shillong and Guwahati, the tremor was felt in other parts of the Northeast, including Kohima, Aizawl, Agartala and Itanagar.
BSF men hurt
B>n Agartala (PTI): Two BSF personnel, including an assistant sub-inspector, were injured when a group of smugglers attacked them at Safrikandi in North Tripura district on Sunday. The incident occurred when the BSF personnel were trying to resist the armed smugglers from despatching goods to the other side of the border. The BSF fired four rounds in the air to disperse the smugglers. The injured assistant sub-inspector, Kamalesh Kumar Tripathi, was admitted to a local hospital.
Rape arrests
Silchar: Cachar police on Sunday arrested three more persons for their alleged involvement in the gangrape of a 17-year-old student on a PWD Road leading to Silchar airport on August 11. They have been identified as Latumeah Laskar, Sebul Ahmed Gaji and Putul Ahmed Laskar.
