PRIYANSHU PICKS

Priyanshu.

Five precious films in your DVD collection:

I have a collection of European and world cinema. I also have a collection of Hollywood and Bollywood bullshit! But my most precious buys have been Hotel Rwanda (2004), The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), Ironweed (1987), In The Bedroom (2001) and La Dolce Vita (1960).

Films you watch on DVD to learn the craft:

I don’t think an actor can learn the craft of acting by watching films on DVDs, however great the films he’s watching. It’s like saying one can become a good basketball player by watching basketball on TV! But watching films or performances and getting inspired by them, not to copy them or to see what the actor has done in it, but to enjoy it is something which every actor should do. I watch films like Paths of Glory (1957), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966), Pather Panchali (1955), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and The Godfather (1972). But I don’t copy the performances because the role you are going to portray is something that you will do. And on that given day, what your choices will be in that mayhem of shoot you can’t pre-decide. I watch films on DVD to get entertained, mostly.

I like watching films like Cat on a Hot tin roof

Films that have inspired you:

Omkara (2006). After watching it, I thought about it for a week and I thought, ‘Oh my god, I wish I could do something like this.’ I was like, man, this is Vishal’s (Bhardwaj) best. I also liked Udaan (2010) quite a bit... it has emotion, entertainment, performances... everything.

Films on your must-watch list:

The Godfather, City Of Gods (2002), Born Free (1966), Gangs of New York (2002) and, of course, Paanch Adhyay and Shunnyo Onko (both of his films that are yet to release).

A recent film that has left you shaken and stirred: Intacto (Spanish, 2001). It’s a brilliant film. I was speechless for a few hours.

I really liked watching the girl with the dragon tattoo series

A film you can watch again and again:

I really liked The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) series. The Devil’s Advocate (1997)... it’s very commercial but I like it! And all of Jack Nicholson films... man, he is fantastic!

Films you watch for fun:

The Last of the Mohicans (1992). I like all Robin Williams films, Jim Carrey’s Me, Myself and Irene (2000), Harold Lloyd’s films, Peter Sellers...

How many films do you watch every week?

I watch at least two films a week.
