Syndicate angle in killing

The murder of a youth, allegedly by two associates of Trinamul leader Arabul Islam’s brother Azizul, alias Khude, at Rajarhat’s Kashipur has laid bare fighting among party workers for the spoils of syndicates.

Family members of Azizul Baidya have accused brothers Miajaan and Moumin Khan of beating him to death when he asked them to return money they owed him and his partner.

“Khude had started supplying construction materials after his brother was elected Bhangar MLA in 2006. Within a couple of years, local Trinamul worker Habibul Biswas emerged as his competitor in the business. Saturday’s murder was a fallout of the rivalry,” said a cop.

Biswas had engaged Baidya and a man named Esharat to procure earth for brick kilns. “The two had paid Rs 4.5 lakh to Miajaan and Moumin, who work for Khude’s syndicate, 10 months ago. Since they could not provide the supply, Baidya and Esharat wanted their money back,” said another investigator.

Baidya died after the brothers allegedly beat him up. Esharat was injured.

When Baidya’s family members went to the police station to lodge an FIR, they found Arabul sitting there with his aides, said Azizul’s uncle Muzaffar. Policemen later went to Baidyas’ house to record the FIR.

“My brother is not involved with the murder,” said Arabul.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation,” said additional superintendent of police (rural), South 24-Parganas, Kankar Prasad Barui.
