A group of around 200 people ransacked RG Kar hospital on Friday after a 15-year-old boy died allegedly because of staff negligence.
Eighteen people were arrested for the attack that left several policemen injured.
Shantu Roy, a resident of Dum Dum, was admitted to the hospital with an injury in his foot on Wednesday. He was taken to the operating table at 11.30pm and administered local anaesthesia after tests confirmed metatarsal fracture. He was shifted to the ICCU at 12.50am after he started having convulsions. Roy was declared dead at 6.30am on Friday.
“A mob stormed into the hospital around 8am and damaged computers and electrical fittings worth Rs 2 lakh. They even injured cops and some of our Group D employees, one of whom had to be admitted here,” said Ajay Kumar Ray, the hospital superintendent.
Hospital services were disrupted for about one-and-a-half hours. Patients already admitted were, however, not affected.
All 18 arrested persons were charged under non-bailable sections.
The boy’s family has not filed any complaint with police or the hospital authorities. The hospital authorities have, however, set up an inquiry committee, which will submit a report by August 25.
