Oxygen mask ‘removed’, wife dies

Burdwan, Aug. 17: A 24-year-old woman admitted to a government hospital in Burdwan died after her husband allegedly removed her oxygen mask and saline channel early today.

Two patients at the female ward of the Katwa sub-divisional hospital claimed they had seen Tuhin Banerjee remove the mask and channel.

The hospital’s acting superintendent, Sandip Pari, however, said: “The patient had turned extremely restless last night and could have removed the oxygen mask herself. A doctor asked her husband to get some medicines. The husband had entered the ward to hand over the medicines to a nurse.”

Rakhi Banerjee had been admitted to the hospital yesterday morning with breathing problems and chest pain.

Rakhi’s father Jadab Chandra Chatterjee lodged a police complaint against Tuhin, a businessman, his father, elder brother, sister-in-law and one of the hospital’s doctors.

Chatterjee alleged the in-laws used to torture his daughter since her marriage two-and-a-half years ago.

The accused are absconding. “We are probing how Tuhin entered the ward beyond visiting hours,” a police officer said.
