Hair cropped for ‘affair’

Bolpur, Aug. 17: A divorcee in Birbhum last night alleged villagers had tied her to a tree and cropped her hair, saying she had an affair with a married man.

Police said the woman was found talking to Newton Sheikh, a villager with whom she allegedly had an affair. Newton, a farmer, was married a few months ago.

When Newton’s brother-in-law, Dablu Sheikh, spotted the two talking in front of his house in Palsa village, the woman called him to her house and hit him on the head with a rod, an officer said. She was arrested today after a complaint by Dablu, the officer added.

The woman, during investigation, alleged some villagers had last night tied her to a tree, beat her up and then cropped her hair.

“We have arrested the woman on Dablu’s complaint. We have also received a separate complaint from the woman and will start a probe soon,” said sub divisional police officer Debashis Nandi.
